On 14 October 2025 Joomla 6.0 "Kuimarisha" came out, together with Joomla 5.4 "Kutegemea". It is the current major version – and the last part of this series. For this review we installed Joomla 6.0.4 of 31 March 2026, the last version of the 6.0 line, with the blog sample data and photographed it. At the end the backends and websites of all seven parts stand side by side: 20 years of Joomla at a glance.

What Joomla 6 brings
According to the Joomla 6.0 announcement, the most important new feature is the automatic update: Joomla 5.1 brought secure updates following the TUF method, and with 5.4 and 6.0 Joomla updates itself for minor releases. Then there are the child template "Cassiopeia Extended" with more colours and font sizes without a CSS file of your own, versioning that now also stores the values of custom fields, two new field types ("Note" and "Number"), smooth transitions between pages in Atum and Cassiopeia, TinyMCE 8 and a cache for language files.
For existing websites the same applies as with Joomla 5: the move from 5.4 to 6.0 is an upgrade, not a migration. The "Behaviour – Backward Compatibility 6" plugin keeps many older extensions running.
The installation
The installer has a new last step: it explains the automatic updates – the website registers with the Joomla project for them and sends its URL, PHP, database and Joomla version and the server's operating system – and offers a button to switch them off.

We look after your Joomla 6
Updates, security and backups – with a maintenance contract we make sure your website stays up to date. If you still run an older version, we bring it to Joomla 6.
See the maintenance contractHow we did it: Joomla 6.0.4 in the original package from downloads.joomla.org, locally in Docker with PHP 8.4 and MySQL 8.4, reachable only on our own machine, files unchanged, with the blog sample data. We only opened the new "Number" field type, we did not save it. Atum shows the dark mode when the system is set to dark. The pictures in the gallery come from the installations of the other parts.
