Joomla 6 is the current version. According to Joomla's roadmap it receives bug fixes until 17 October 2028 and security updates until 16 October 2029 – about four years after its release on 14 October 2025. Here you can read what happens until then and what you should do so that your website stays protected all the way.

What happens until then
Joomla brings a new minor version about every six months: 6.0 on 14 October 2025, 6.1 on 14 April 2026, 6.2 on 13 October 2026. The roadmap already plans Joomla 6.3. Joomla 4 and Joomla 5 both ended with the minor version x.4 – following this pattern, Joomla 6.4 would be the last.
Important in everyday use: Joomla only maintains the newest minor version. If you stay on 6.1, you no longer receive security updates once 6.2 is out.
What you should do
- Install updates promptly – the minor versions too, not only the small fixes.
- Keep extensions and template up to date; they have to fit the Joomla version.
- Back up before every update.
- Use PHP 8.4 if your host offers it (Joomla manual).
