On 27 September 2012 Joomla 3.0 came out – the first Joomla version whose backend and default template adapt to the smartphone. For this review we installed Joomla 3.0.4 of 23 April 2013, the last version of the 3.0 line, once more and photographed it, on a phone too. Plus an overview of all eleven lines of Joomla 3 that followed until 2023.

Bootstrap and the smartphone
Joomla 3.0 took on Twitter Bootstrap and built two new templates on it: Isis for the backend and Protostar for the website, both responsive. According to the Joomla 3.0 announcement, a three-step installation, a PostgreSQL driver, language packs straight from the extension manager, the "Guest" user group from the start and a reworked, accessible Beez3 came with it.
Joomla 3.0 was a short-term release: if you used it, you had to move to the next version every six months; most existing websites, Joomla wrote, would not want to leave 2.5. A new requirement too: "magic quotes" had to be switched off in PHP.
The installation in three steps
Seven steps became three: configuration, database, overview. Licence and FTP left the process, and the server check now sits in the overview at the end – with "Magic Quotes GPC Off" as a requirement.
The website: Protostar
We chose the blog sample data: six articles, a plain blog with a sidebar. Protostar rearranges itself on small screens – the sidebar moves below the content, the menu gets narrower.
The backend: Isis
At the top the dark menu bar: System, Users, Menus, Content, Components, Extensions, Help. Many lists now have a sidebar with sub-items and filters, and the buttons sit in a toolbar above.

Joomla 3 from 3.0 to 3.10

The last line, 3.10, came out on 17 August 2021 together with Joomla 4.0 as "the bridge", according to the Joomla 4.0 and 3.10 announcement: before the move it checks whether server and extensions are ready for Joomla 4. Support for Joomla 3 ended on 17 August 2023.

What came after Joomla 3
Almost nine years after Joomla 3.0, Joomla 4.0 came out on 17 August 2021 – with a new backend, workflows and Bootstrap 5. That is where this series continues.

It has had no security updates since August 2023. We bring it to Joomla 6 – we name the effort after an inventory.
