Joomla 1.6 was the big rebuild after Joomla 1.5: user groups and permissions you define yourself, categories nested to any depth, and template styles. For this review we installed Joomla 1.6.6 of 26 July 2011, the last version of this line, and photographed it.

What was new in Joomla 1.6
According to the Joomla 1.6 announcement:
- Finer access control with user groups and viewing levels of your own – for viewing as well as for editing.
- Categories from one level to as many as you like; the rigid sections were dropped.
- Packages with several extensions that update with one click.
- Better support for multilingual websites.
- Modules with publishing start and end times and more control over where they appear.
- New templates with semantic markup and template styles for more creative control.
- Overrides for the output of the backend too, and a backend template of their own per user.

It gets no security updates any more. We bring it to Joomla 6 – we name the effort after an inventory.
See Joomla update and migrationHow we did it: Joomla 1.6.6 in the original package from downloads.joomla.org, locally in Docker with PHP 5.6 and MySQL 5.5, reachable only on our own machine, files unchanged, with the default sample data. PHP error display is switched off so that notices about outdated functions do not cover the pictures.
