Review: Joomla 6.1

Joomla 6.1 "Nyota" brought a captcha without an account, a visual workflow editor, fields for audio, video and documents, and versions for modules. For this review we installed Joomla 6.1.4 of 29 September 2026, the last version of this line, and photographed it.

What was new in Joomla 6.1

According to the Joomla 6.1 announcement:

  • A proof-of-work captcha: invisible, privacy-friendly, no account or API needed.
  • The visual workflow editor shows the whole publication process.
  • Three new media fields: audio, video and documents.
  • Versions and language associations for modules too.
  • If automatic updates were on in 6.0.4, 6.1.0 arrived by itself.

How we did it: Joomla 6.1.4 in the original package from downloads.joomla.org, locally in Docker with PHP 8.3 and MySQL 8.4, reachable only on our own machine, files unchanged, with the blog sample data. PHP error display is switched off so that notices about outdated functions do not cover the pictures.
