Joomla Next or Joomla 4, Glimp and other news

What has happened in the last two or three weeks? A quick overview!

Joomla! 4 or Joomla! Next?

Michael Babker is one of the most active Joomla developers and opened this Github repo on March 16, 2015: obsolete. As you can read there, this is just his personal playground where he wants to try out his ideas. There isn't much to see there yet, but perhaps this is the birth of the new Joomla version.

Joomla! 3.4.1 has been released

Joomla version 3.4.1 was released on March 21, 2015. Find it here: http://www.joomla.org/announcements/release-news/5587-joomla-3-4-1-released.html ! Fortunately, almost all of the major problems that existed with Joomla 3.4.0 have been fixed. There are also no new major problems known so far. This makes Joomla 3.4.1 one of the most stable Joomla! versions currently and is recommended for all new installations. But then there was a small problem where the buttons in Virtuemart no longer worked. This problem has now been resolved with the latest Virtuemart version.

A new organizational structure

The new structure is explained in a total of 45 pages. The first 20 pages describe the current situation and describe the current problems. The remaining pages are then for the actual changes. The new structure provides for an Open Source Matter Inc. as an umbrella organization for a total of 11 departments. The 11 departments can in turn have their own teams. Each team is headed by a team leader and each department should have a director. The hope is for more transparency and a clearer structure. But there are many questions in the air at the moment. For example, it is mocked that those who developed this new structure can also vote in the election. Some see this as jeopardizing the neutrality of the election. Another thing is that these changes are already outdated. Thanks to github and other tools, it is now much easier to participate in development and thanks to modern software, communication is also much better than it used to be. In any case, the discussions are in full swing and at the moment there seem to be three main positions: The project is rejected and everything stays the same. The proposal is accepted and the changes are implemented. The project was rejected but corrected in some places. No matter what the decision is, it is a very exciting discussion and we are excited to see how it turns out.

Glip partnership

Joomla and Glip have entered into a partnership. If you don't know Glip yet: A tool to bundle communication across multiple channels and also with various productivity tools. You can find out more about Glip on this page: https://glip.com/joomla . Thanks to this partnership, everyone who contributes to the Joomla project gets a free Glip account. Glip seems to be one of the better tools when it comes to teamwork and organization.
